RANGO

With Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Ray Winstone, Harry Dean Stanton, Ned Beatty, Timothy Olyphant

Written by John Logan, James Ward Byrkit, Gore Verbinski
Directed by Gore Verbinski

The man who made his mark with the Pirates Of The Caribbean hit franchise, a well versed grasp of CGI and an ally in Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski took all of this into his new fully animated project. A family moves and in transit through the Nevada desert a pet chameleon drops off the trailer. A bit of a loner creating a fantasy world of his own, here in this arid land he walks into a town of strange and odd desert creatures with a serious water crisis. The town is controlled by some conniving power hungry and even evil characters. With a tall tale he realizes he can be anything he wants here, adopts the name Rango and is appointed sheriff. But this opens the floodgates to a whole lot of trouble.

On the surface this seems like a kids movie, but it's far from it.

Some sharp references get squeezed in like a Clint Eastwood character, some adult slanted themes and a darker melancholic undertone, that adds to my argument that this is more for the parents of the Toy Story demographic than the kids themselves.

Bonus features include a new ending, a commentary track for more insight into the making of the movie, deleted scenes, and a look at some of the real desert creatures (by a South African expert).
